The family of Botham Jean, the man murdered in his own apartment by an off-duty police officer who mistook his apartment for her own, is not buying the cop’s story, The Washington Post reports.
Last week, Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, 30, shot and killed Botham Jean, 26, after entering his apartment. She claims that she believed the apartment was her own and she found the door ajar and saw what she believed to be a burglar.
But attorney Lee Merritt, who represents Jean’s family, said witnesses have disputed her account.
“There are witnesses who said that before the gunshots, they heard the officer knocking at the door and repeatedly saying, ‘Let me in,’ ” Merritt told The Washington Post.
Merritt also said there was no way Guyger could have mistaken Jean’s apartment for her own.
“In fact, to ensure no one mistook his apartment, the way this officer is claiming in this case, he went out and bought the biggest, brightest, red rug and placed it right there at his doorstep,” the attorney said.
