MSNBC anchor Hallie Jackson’s show near President Donald Trump’s Bedminster, New Jersey resort had a live audience Wednesday – and they erupted at the news of the arrest of Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY).
Broadcasting from Somerville, near where Trump is spending his vacation at his resort, Jackson announced, “Congressman Chris Collins, the first member of Congress to back Donald Trump for president, has been arrested. He’s expected to appear in federal court in New York today.”
The crowd erupted in applause when Jackson announced the news.
“Law enforcement officials say the New York Republican surrendered to the FBI this morning on insider trading charges,” she added.
MSNBC analyst Daniel Goldman, a former federal prosecutor, said that Collins faces the real risk of jail time in the case.
“If he is convicted in this case… he would likely go to jail. I’m still digging through the indictment to try to figure out what the evidence [is] against him. But it looks like it’s a pretty good documentary case,” he said.
