An Oklahoma school called off classes on Monday and Tuesday after they said a group of parents threatened a transgender student on Facebook, KFOR reports.
The 12-year-old student, known only as “Maddie” in the press, has identified as a girl since 2016. She had previously used the bathroom for staff members, but after renovations she struggled to find it and used the girls’ bathroom instead.
A parent in the district subsequently found out about the incident and posted threatening comments in a private Facebook group for parents called “Achille ISD Parent Group.”
One of the comments read: “If he wants to be a female, make him a female. A good sharp knife will do the job really quick.” Another person suggested, “Just tell the kids to kick ass in the bathroom and it won’t want come back!!”
In response to those threats, Achille superintendent Rick Beene said they were asked to close schools earlier this week. He also added that most of the comments in the conversation are not from parents of any students.
Brandy Rose, Maddie’s mother, said the experience has changed her daughter from being upbeat and positive to being afraid for her life. “She’s an awesome kid,” she said. “To see any fear in her, I can’t explain how bad that hurts me for them to hurt her.”
