A former federal prosecutor predicted that President Donald Trump would step down to protect his children in an appearance on MSNBC Monday.
Former federal prosecutor Cynthia Alksne told MSNBC host Chris Matthews that longtime Trump fixer Michael Cohen is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
“He’s going to have to make a deal. He has nowhere else to go,” she said. “He’s pushed himself away from Trump. He doesn’t have the same flexibility. Trump can’t pardon him. He potentially has state charges.”
Alksne suggested there was one option Cohen has that others don’t.
“I’ll tell you what he’s got that Manafort doesn’t have. He has relationships and deals with Trump’s kids,” she said. “He can — if he can give the prosecutor something on Trump’s kids, now you’ve got a pressure point that is very different from what Manafort can do.”
“That is pressure on the president?” Matthews asked.
“He’s not going to put his kids in jail. That’s the only redeeming quality of the guy,” Alksne said.
“He would give up the presidency to free them?” Matthews wondered.
“Yes,” Alksne predicted.
