A 17-year-old black male in Pennsylvania was shot and killed by a police officer as video circulated showing the teen was gunned down with his back to the officer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
The victim was identified as Antwon Rose II, of Rankin, Pennsylvania. Rose was confirmed by the Woodland Hills School District as one of their students, and the school issued a statement expressing condolences.
The teen had been a passenger in the car, which Allegheny County police officers suspected of being involved in a shooting earlier Tuesday in a nearby area. While authorities said they found two firearms on the floor of the car, they did say that Rose was not carrying a weapon when he was shot.
In the video posted to Facebook by user Shauny Mary, the woman recording the video is heard saying, “Why are they shooting? All they did was run and they’re shooting at them!” The video has been viewed more than 103,000 times Thursday morning.
Mayor Louis Payne of East Pittsburgh said on Wednesday that the officer who shot Rose was hired last month and had been formally sworn in just hours before the encounter.
In response to the black teen’s death, dozens of people protested outside the East Pittsburgh Police Department. “No justice, no peace!” they chanted. Other people carried signs that read, “Justice4Antwon” and “#BlackLivesMatter.”
