An 8-month-old Palestinian baby has reportedly died after inhaling tear gas during the fierce violence at the Gaza-Israel border during mass protests over the relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem, HuffPost reports.
Leila Anwar Ghandoor died in hospital on Tuesday morning, becoming one of eight children killed when Israeli troops used deadly force against Palestinian protesters along the border. She died of asphyxiation from tear gas.
It is not clear how close to the troubled border the child and her family were at the time when Leila died. On Tuesday, a doctor in Gaza said the infant’s death may have been caused by a pre-existing medical condition.
The family held the baby’s funeral on Tuesday, the day of “Nakba,” or “Catastrophe,” a memorial of the hundreds of thousand Palestinians who were driven from their lands exactly 70 years ago after the State of Israel was created.
Palestine health ministry said the violence has left 60 killed and 2,700 were injured in what the Palestinian Authority condemned as a “massacre.” Medics and journalists were among those who got injured.
On Monday, around 40,000 people gathered at the security fence separating the Gaza Strip and Israel, the culmination of six weeks of demonstration in the run-up to the US embassy move.
