Former Trump administration aides are having a tough time landing jobs that are typically offered to staffers with White House experience, BuzzFeed News reports.
Firms that recruit from presidential administrations say that the risk of hiring former Trump officials “outweighs the rewards.”
According to interviews with 10 current and former officials, recruiters, and lobbyists, former Trump aides’ job outlook is “pretty bleak.”
One firm made the “active decision” not to hire from Trump’s White House because of the “reputational risk.” Another company rejected a former White House official explicitly because his affiliation with Trump would be problematic.
“[Companies] are all worried about public backlash,” a top recruiter told BuzzFeed. “That’s more real with these guys than I’ve seen with anyone else.”
“It’s going to be more challenging than ever before for folks coming out of the White House,” the recruiter added. “There seems to be more of a visceral reaction — there’s no question that’s true.”
Another consultant said that the cloud of the Bob Mueller probe has made it problematic to hire certain top officials.
“There’s a legal risk there,” the consultant told BuzzFeed. “There’s a certain level of uncertainness around the toxicity. Generally, there aren’t a ton of jobs waiting for those people.”
“A lot of the people in the White House don’t realize how tight the market is right now for their services,” a former White House official told the outlet. “Any job they can hope to get on the outside will have to be because of their work before being in the White House.”
