In the latest turn of events in the ongoing Tillerson firing saga, the man who put out a statement acknowledging now former Secretary of State was “unaware” why President Donald Trump was firing him has also been fired.
On Tuesday, Steve Goldstein, undersecretary for public diplomacy put out this statement (via CNN):
He also told the press Tillerson had learned about his firing via a tweet.
Then, a short time later, AP annnounced Goldstein was fired, based on two sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, presumably because they did not want to be fired too.
The officials said Steve Goldstein, the undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, was informed of the move shortly after he released a statement in his name saying that Tillerson was “unaware of the reason” for his termination. Goldstein had also told reporters that Tillerson learned of his firing Tuesday morning from Trump’s tweet announcing he was nominating CIA chief Mike Pompeo to lead the State Department.
After dropping his morning bombshell, Trump is currently headed to California.
