President Donald Trump congratulated Martin Luther King Jr. as he signed a proclamation honoring MLK Jr. Day Friday.
“This is a great and important day, Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, 2018, by the president of the United States of America, a proclamation. Congratulations to him,” Trump said before signing the document.

Trump’s comment was reminiscent of his remark about Frederick Douglass, when he said the 19th-century abolitionist “is being recognized more and more.”
Trump spoke at the event alongside King’s nephew Isaac Newton Farris Jr.
After the event, Farris Jr. slammed Trump as “racially ignorant” in response to his “shithole countries” comments.
“I don’t think the Present Trump is a racist in the traditional sense as we know in this country,” he told CNN. “I think President Trump is racially ignorant and racially uninformed. But I don’t think he is a racist in the traditional sense.”
