Isaac Newton Farris Jr., Martin Luther King Jr.’s nephew who spoke alongside President Donald Trump at the White House Friday, called the president “racially ignorant” immediately after in an interview with CNN.
Discussing Trump’s comments calling African nations “shithole countries,” Farris explained, “I don’t think the Present Trump is a racist in the traditional sense as we know in this country.”
“I think President Trump is racially ignorant and racially uninformed. But I don’t think he is a racist in the traditional sense,” he said, adding that the comment was “another example of him speaking without knowing the facts.”
Farris spoke alongside Trump at a White House event honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“Congratulations to him,” Trump said of King Jr. as he signed the proclamation.
