An Indian couple and their son were arrested for beating his wife in Florida, The Tampa Bay Times reports.
Police arrested 33-year-old Davbir Kalsi, his father, 67-year-old Jasbir Kalsi, and his mother, 61-year-old Bhupinder Kalsi after finding Davbir’s wife “badly beaten and bruised over her entire body.”
Police say the beatings had “been ongoing for an extended period of time.”
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office says 33-year-old Silky Gaind called her parents in India to tell them about the abuse. Her parents called the police.
Hillsborough deputies arrived at the home Saturday and found Gaind trying to open the door.
Deputies say she “screamed for the deputy to save her and her child.”
Kalsi tried to prevent police from getting inside before a deputy forced his way in and arrested him.
The Sheriff’s office discovered that Kalsi’s parents traveled from India to “counsel and discipline” Gaind after Kalsi told them she was being “disobedient,” The Tampa Bay Times reports.
The day before deputies arrived, Kalsi reportedly “repeatedly and forcefully” hit her.
When Gaind tried to defend herself, Kalsi’s parents began to hit her as well.
Police say Jasbir Kalsi threatened to stab her with a kitchen knife.
According to the police report, Gaind was holding the couple’s child during the assault and the 1-year-old was accidentally hit in the face.
Police say Kalsi dragged Gaind into another room and locked her inside.
Devbir and Jasbir Kalsi are charged with false imprisonment, child abuse, and denying access to 911.
Devbir is also charged with felony battery.
Jasbir is also charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Bhupinder Kalsi is charged with battery domestic violence and failure to report child abuse.
