President Donald Trump may tab a Democratic senator for a cabinet job in order to get an extra Republican vote for his Obamacare repeal, Bloomberg reports.
White House and Republican officials are reportedly floating West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin as Energy secretary so that he would be replaced with a Republican by the state’s GOP governor.
Manchin was considered for the job before Trump nominated former Texas Governor Rick Perry.
Perry is under consideration to replace retired General John Kelly as Homeland Security Secretary after Kelly became the new White House chief of staff.
Manchin’s spokesperson did not comment on whether he would take the job.
“Senator Manchin has not had any recent conversations with the Administration about the Secretary of Energy position. He remains committed to serving the people of West Virginia,” spokesman Jonathan Kott told Bloomberg.
If Manchin were to vacate his seat, his replacement would be selected by Governor Jim Justice, a former Democrat who switched to the GOP earlier this month.
This would presumably give the Republicans in the senate 50 votes for an Obamacare repeal.
