Erica Newsome, 37, drove for two days with her dead 11-year-old daughter in the car, NY Daily News reports.
Newsome was caught by two New Yorkers dragging her dead daughter, Kaye-lea Plummer out of her truck after crashing into a guard rail in rural, eastern West Virginia on Sunday. motorists traveling through West Virginia spotted her pulling the body of a child out of her crashed vehicle and then dragging it into the woods.
The coroner said Kaye-lea had been dead for at least 24 hours when she was found.
“It was obvious that the 11-year-old did not die from injuries from the accident,” State Police Sgt. Herby Barlow said told the newspaper. “Her injuries were non-motor vehicle injuries.”
Newsome told police she was taking her daughter to Buffalo, N.Y., where her father lived. She said Kaye-lea didn’t move, eat, drink or use the restroom during the two day drive from Florida to West Virginia.
Kaye-lea’s father, Donath Plummer, told News 4 that Newsome told him she’d drop their daughter off the next day last Saturday. Then she said they needed more time because of car trouble and to rest.
On Sunday, he found out Kaye-lea was dead.
Plummer said he thinks Newsome “snapped” and that she’d been “the only person I trusted with my child.”
