Ki’ari Pope, 8, died after being dared to drink boiling water, My Palm Beach Post reports.
Pope died months after the incident, telling her mother’s “paramour” late Sunday she couldn’t breathe, Florida Department of Children and Families said. She was unresponsive minutes later and pronounced dead early Monday morning.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for funeral expenses.
Ki’ari also received a tracheotomy after the incident. The incision in the windpipe left her deaf and with chronic respiratory problems.
Her mouth and throat were badly burned after her cousin dared her to drink the boiling water in March. Florida authorities have investigated the incident and many other allegations of abuse and neglect surrounding Pope.
“The loss of this child is truly devastating and our condolences go out to all those who loved her,” Department Secretary Mike Carroll said in a statement Wednesday. “We have opened a child death investigation to examine the circumstances surrounding her death and will deploy a Critical Incident Rapid Response Team to review all interactions this family has had with Florida’s child welfare system.
