Spicer: There's nothing we know of that'd lead anyone to believe Trump Jr.'s meeting wasn't about adoption policy https://t.co/5OqNnWwtIc— CNN (@CNN) July 17, 2017
During an off-camera press briefing on Monday, Press Secretary Sean Spicer — back from a three-week hiatus from behind the podium — told a whopper about the Donald Trump Jr. meeting.
When asked about President Trump’s tweet from earlier this morning claiming “most politicians” would have taken the meeting with the Russian lawyer, Sean Spicer said this:
“There’s nothing we know of that would lead anyone to believe Trump Jr.’s meeting wasn’t about adoption policy,” Spicer said.
Yet, that is not remotely true as evidenced by the email chain Trump, Jr. tweeted out himself.
In that email chain, according to the New York Times, not only was it obvious that the dirt Trump Jr. was going after was stuff that would “incriminate Hillary” but that the meeting also involved a Russian official and “some official documents” that are clearly not adoption-focused.
According to the Times:
“Emin just called and asked me to contact you with something very interesting,” Mr. Goldstone wrote in the email. “The Crown prosecutor of Russia met with his father Aras this morning and in their meeting offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.”
He added, “What do you think is the best way to handle this information and would you be able to speak to Emin about it directly?”
There is no such title as Crown Prosecutor in Russia – the Crown Prosecution Service is a British term – but the equivalent in Russia is the Prosecutor General of Russia.
That office is held by Yury Yakovlevich Chaika, a Putin appointee who is known to be close to Ms. Veselnitskaya.
It is unclear why Spicer is deciding to stick by this easily disproven version of events in defense of Trump Jr. especially since President Trump’s tweet from this email seemed to acknowledge it wasn’t just about adoption by was all right because such meetings to get dirt are “just politics.”
