The classified intelligence on ISIS Trump shared with Russian officials had been gathered by an Israeli hack of the Islamic State’s computers, Haaretz reports.
The New York Times first reported that the Israeli intelligence prevented laptops from being carried on flights from certain Muslim countries that ISIS wanted to hide bombs in. Israel told the United States to be careful with the information, but Trump shared it with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak at a May meeting in the White House.
The fear in sharing the information with Russia is that it might find its way back to Iran, Syria, and back to ISIS. Some of what happened has been publicly reported, but ISIS could potentially rework its communications systems to prevent further Israeli interception using the same means that delivered this information.
Foreign countries including Israel have reportedly been afraid of sharing sensitive information with the Trump administration because of its penchant for leaks and perceived proximity to Russia.
