Trump accused Obama of releasing 122 Guantanamo Bay detainees who ended up returning to combat, ABC reports.
Once again, Trump seemingly got his information from TV:
122 vicious prisoners, released by the Obama Administration from Gitmo, have returned to the battlefield. Just another terrible decision!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 7, 2017
Trump’s tweet appeared an hour after a Fox report that featured a graphic quoting the 122 number.
But a September 2016 report from the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence, found 113 of those 122 detainees who began “re-engaging” after release from Gitmo were let out by the Bush administration.
Only nine were released during the Obama administration. In all, 6% of prisoners Obama released returned to terrorism, compared to 21% of those Bush released, according to Director of National Intelligence data.
Of that 122 Trump referenced, data found 30 of them dead, 25 in custody and 67 of them unaccounted for. Another 86 formerly detained terror prisoners are “suspected of re-engaging.”
