A new profile of Sean Hannity published on CNN Money contains some odd new details, including a bizarre incident with his colleague Juan Williams a liberal commentator on the network.
It was after one of their “spirited” arguments on-air last year that Hannity reportedly drew his weapon, turned on the laser sight, and pointed it at his colleague, according to three sources cited in the report. They told CNN that Williams and a number of people on the set that day were “clearly disturbed” by it.
The incident was reported to Bill Shine, the network’s co-president, but nothing came of it. Shine is a good friend of Hannity’s and served as his former producer. While the network does not deny the incident happened, their characterization of it is much different.
“Sean Hannity has been trained in firearm safety since he was 11 years old and has a license to carry a gun in five states, including New York,” Fox News said in a statement to CNNMoney. “The situation was thoroughly investigated and it was found that no one was put in any danger.” (The spokesperson said the incident took place in October 2016.)
The Fox News spokesperson also provided the following statements from Hannity and Williams.
“While discussing the issue of firearms, I showed my good friend Juan Williams my unloaded firearm in a professional and safe manner for educational purposes only,” Hannity’s statement read. “Every precautionary procedure that I have been trained in since the age of 11 was followed. I’ve had a conceal carry permit in five states for all of my adult life. Any other interpretation of this is outright false reporting.”
The sources cited in the report also admit that Hannity was just “showing off” his weapon, but the way in which they say he did it was disturbing. They said that the little red dot of laser sight was “bobbing around” Williams’s torso.
Williams’s statement was that this was being “sensationalized” and that Hannity had “everything under total control.”
The rest of the profile notes how Hannity seems spoiling for a fight, both with his non-sympathetic show guests or random people on Twitter. He seems to be drifting further into “Alex Jones” territory with his Trump sycophancy. He has taken to calling all other outlets than Fox News “the alt-left propaganda media” (a charge not without irony coming from an unpaid, unofficial adviser to the Trump campaign). He has also implied that the Wikileaks reveal of CIA documents effectively proves that they conducted the “false flag” hacking operation and tried to pin it on the Russians.
For his colleagues’ sake, we hope going forward he keeps his guns in his holster.
