Newly elected Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman Tom Perez slammed President Trump on Tuesday when he suggested that his speech to Congress was heavily influenced by his chief strategist Stephen Bannon.
Perez was officially elected to lead the DNC over the weekend in Atlanta. Without wasting any time, he bashed Trump for pedaling Bannon’s ideas.
“This was Steve Bannon on steroids with a smile,” Perez said on MSNBC after Trump delivered his speech.
“It started out with alternative facts, ‘I inherited a mess from Barack Obama.’ No, Obama inherited the Great Recession,” he said.
Perez also tore into Trump for frequently “taking credit for things you had nothing to do with” and for “immigrant baiting.”
“You know that immigrant baiting, that’s like the salt and pepper on the table of the Trump administration,” he said. “And then you close it up with a bunch of promises that you will never keep.”
Rep. Keith Ellison joined Perez during his appearance on MSNBC and suggested that the wave of protests and activism has served to re-energize the Democratic Party.
“I’d say there’s a new spirit,” Ellison said. “It’s a good time to get re-involved with the Democratic Party.”
