Tracey Tong refused to stand and watch a poor Muslim couple get attacked by a xenophobic and verbally abusive subway passenger in New York City.
The xenophobe, who also appeared to be Latina, antagonized the couple for nothing more than the fact that they were Muslims.
“Why are you here? Why are you in this country? You are not one of us,” she said.
Another rider tried to silence the woman, but she shot back, saying, “No, you don’t understand … you are not even from here!”
That’s when Tong stepped in and defended the couple.
“I am not asking you to be quiet. I am asking you to please respect her … In Spanish, in English, in Chinese, in French. Whatever language you want me to tell you,” Tong said, appearing flustered.
Tong, who is of Chinese and Peruvian origins, refused to let the Muslim couple get bullied.
“Whether you’re born here, from Puerto Rico or wherever you are from … I don’t like the way you are treating her. We are all in this together. Whether you like what’s going on in the government or not, f–k it, you got to deal with it. You are a grown woman.”
The xenophobic woman even asked the Muslim couple to tell her what they were carrying in their suitcases.
“Because he looks Indian or Muslim, is that what it is?” asked Tong.
“Yes,” responded the woman.
At that point, other passengers could be heard voicing their disbelief in how racist the woman was.
“I didn’t even think about it,” Tong said, explaining that she was pumped with adrenaline.
“I gave her two minutes to calm down and she didn’t do it.”
