Anna Yocca, 32, of Tennessee, is facing criminal charges for attempting to induce an abortion with a coat hanger, Jezebel reports.
Yocca, who was previously charged with attempted murder, has now been charged with aggravated assault with a weapon, attempted procurement of a miscarriage and attempted criminal abortion.
The attempted murder charge was dropped to aggravated assault, but prosecutors went back to a grand jury to get new charges filed against her.
Donald Trump said during his presidential run that there should be a punishment for women who have abortions, but was vague about any particulars.
Yocca has been in jail since December 2015. She’s accused of filling a bathtub with water in September 2015 and attempting to abort her pregnancy at 24 weeks. her boyfriend drove her to the hospital and she began bleeding heavily, where she delivered a 1.5 pound baby boy. Police said the baby suffered serious injuries from her homemade abortion and will face lifelong health problems. The baby has been adopted out of state.
Yocca’s attorneys tried to have all charges against her dropped in October. They argued Yocca had been indicted under a statute which doesn’t apply to women attempting to self-abort.
