John Oliver blamed everything but his own sneering coverage for Donald Trump’s election victory, Jezebel reports. Then he blew up the numbers 2016, symbolizing the destruction of a very bad year.
“Yeah, it turns out hindsight, much like the year we’re all desperately looking forward to, is 20/20,” Oliver told his audience.
“There is no longer a consensus on what a fact is,” he continued on. “Trust in mainstream media outlets has been falling, and people can choose to get their news from echo chambers that validate their views.”
There were many factors that contributed to the contentious 2016 race, according to Oliver.
“Deep racism and/or indifference to it,” played a role, he said, further noting Hillary Clinton’s inability to reach white portions of the Obama coalition were also a factor.
The media’s obsessive coverage of Trump, including broadcasting his rallies in their entirety were also targeted by Oliver.
In addition, the role of Facebook and social media in spreading completely false information and replacing useful journalism while TV news outlets chase ratings exclusively also contributed to a very bad year and the election of Donald Trump.
