A Florida police officer showed up drunk to accept an award at a Mothers Against Drunk Driving conference.
Pinellas County Officer Michael Szeliga showed up to the award ceremony so drunk that he couldn’t even walk straight, according to Raw Story.
Szeliga, who has made over 100 DUI arrests, was set to receive an award for cracking down on drunk driving. It is believed that Szeliga drove himself to the conference in his drunken state.
The officer did not receive his award that night after a supervisor saw that he was “wasted” and sent him back to his hotel. The officer was given a one day paid suspension.
“It was wrong, and again, one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard of. When I first heard about it, that was (what) my reaction was. ‘Come on, you’ve got to be kidding me. Really?’” Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said.
Despite the harsh words from the sheriff and the officer’s behavior, Szeliga was promoted to detective following the incident. He now serves as a detective for the crimes against childrens unit.
