Another day, another white cop using unnecessary force against a black citizen. In this case, the citizen was “not complying” because he had had a stroke and was paralyzed. The cop pepper sprayed and Tasered him because, why not.
That’s how we roll in America. These are the freedoms we celebrate this Memorial Day, so thanks for that.
Things started with a traffic stop. In the early stages of a stroke, 34-year-old David Washington was seen driving erratically. He was able to bring his car to a stop before the stroke hit him hard.
Cop Shaun Jurgens then walked up to Washington’s car and Tasered him without warning as he sat at the wheel of his car staring forward. Jurgens can then be heard yelling, ”Get out the car. Get out the car, or I’m going to f*cking smoke you. Get out the car, right now. We ain’t playing.”
After another officer opens the door of the car, Jurgens sprays a massive amount of pepper spray into the face of Washington, who barely flinches.
Then, as Washington slowly attempts to unbuckle his seatbelt, officers pull him to the ground, bending his arm behind his back. While on the ground, Washington tell the officers “I can’t breath,” adding that he has been sick for days. It was later determined that he was having a stroke.
According to Jurgens, he said that he thought at the time Washington may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and that he was concerned because there was a school nearby. Sure, whatever.
Saying he did nothing wrong, the Virginia police officer nonetheless resigned from the police force, but only after this video was released.
No charges have been filed against cop Jurgens, though the usual investigation is going to drag on for awhile.
Still, justice has been done. Stroke victim Washington was taken to a nearby hospital and later released so that he could be charged with reckless driving and driving on a revoked license.
