ISIL has released a new video which shows British aide worker Alan Henning beheaded, much in the same manner as the previous videos. Also like in the previous videos the actual beheading isn’t shown, but there is a slow pan of the bloody aftermath.
“Because of our parliament’s decision to attack the Islamic State,” Henning says, his voice cracking slightly. “I as a member of the British public will now pay the price for that decision.” Henning was captured by militants the day after Christmas 2013, after delivering supplies to Syrian refugees.
Peter Edward Kassig, the subject of this CNN profile from 2012, was also in Syria providing aid, although Kassig was a former Army Ranger who served in Iraq in 2007. After separating from the Army he tried college but told CNN, “I wanted more of a challenge, a sense of purpose.”
He also said, “We each get one life and that’s it. We get one shot at this and we don’t get any do-overs, and for me, it was time to put up or shut up….The way I saw it, I didn’t have a choice. This is what I was put here to do. I guess I am just a hopeless romantic, and I am an idealist, and I believe in hopeless causes.”
With Alan Henning beheaded, the murderer from the ISIL videos said that Kassig would be next.
