A new study shows that the average IQ in Western nations is dropping steadily and has been since the 1950s.
Research from the University of Hartford shows that the average world IQ has dropped consistently since 1950 and is expected to fall by about eight total IQ points by the year 2110.
In the United States, the country reportedly saw a 3-point increase in IQ between the 1930s and 1980s but has seen a decline since.
Dr. James Flynn says this increase was likely due to better nutrition and living conditions and now that effect is seeing diminishing returns.
The Daily Mail reports that some scientists believe that “because educated people are deciding to have fewer children… subsequent generations are largely made up of less intelligent people.”
So, think the film “Idiocracy,” but real.
Another study by psychologist Jan te Nijenhuis at the University of Amsterdam says the average westerner has lost an average of 14 IQ points since the Victorian Era.
He too believes that this is due to the fact that intelligent women have increasingly opted to have fewer children.
A study by the Ross University Medical School suggests that as more intelligent women opt to have fewer children, the average IQ drops about .8 points per generation from that phenomenon alone.
Meanwhile, Nijenhuis’ study says that “simple reaction time has slowed since 1889,” and the decline in IQ between 1889 and 2004 is about 12.45-13.35 IQ points. He says the average IQ falls by about 1.16 points per decade.
