My old man used to always say, if you can’t handle your liquor, don’t drink. And never drink and drive. And never steal a python.
I’m kidding about that last point, but it would have been good advice for an Albany, New York woman.
Sarah Espinosa, 22, apparently got drunk, stole a snake from Petco and then proceeded to crash her car into a firehouse, damaging two fire trucks inside a garage.
While it is unclear whether Espinosa was drunk before she shoplifted the live python, or got drunk afterwards, what is known is that upon leaving the store with the snake she drove her 2010 Toyota Prius over the center median on a local turnpike, crashed into a Nissan Maxima, then plowed through the front garage door, ramming into two fire trucks inside. Firefighters giving Espinosa first aid noticed the snake around her neck and removed it for its own safety.
After she came to, Espinosa “had no idea where she was or what happened,” the police report said. Surveillance cameras at the firehouse captured the entire fracas, though the tape does not appear to have yet been released.
Espinosa was arrested shortly after beings treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. Luckily, no one else was injured in the incident. She faces several misdemeanor charges following the bizarre incident, including second degree reckless endangerment, DWI, reckless driving, petty larceny and unlawful possession of marijuana (A ziplock bag of marijuana and a glass pipe were found in her backpack when police searched the impounded car.)
The python was safely returned to Petco, where it is reported to be resting comfortably. The snake, which retails for $89.99, was in “saleable condition.”
