A grainy security camera video has emerged showing the moment when the Fort Lauderdale airport gunman opened fire in an attack that killed five people and injured more than a dozen others.
The video, published by TMZ, shows the baggage claim area near terminals two and three where the tragic attack took place. People are seen walking to and from baggage claim, when the shooter–wearing a blue shirt–walks into frame. He draws a gun from his waistband, firing at least two shots and then running.
The other passengers reacted with terror, freezing in place and then seeking whatever shelter they can find. An elderly woman cowers behind a thin metal luggage rack, while others dive to the floor, crawling for any cover they can find.
The tabloid implied they have more video of the shooting, but “are only showing the seconds leading up to the first shots fired and the panic that ensued.” Other video, filmed by those in the airport and shared on social media, showed the aftermath including one woman seriously injured on the floor, a pool of blood by her head.
An uninjured woman is crying, saying that she “sat next to [the injured woman] on the plane. She also said that shell casings “were flying all around us.”
The suspected shooter, Esteban Santiago, was revealed to have a history of mental illness or injury, as well as having trouble with the law before this horrific attack. Santiago has been charged, including for “an act of violence at an airport,” and could face the death penalty.
