As we reported, President-elect Donald Trump plans to leave his business in the hands of his two adult sons, Donald Junior and Eric. Noticeably absent was Ivanka Trump, whose family is making plans to move to D.C. While most thought it was about her husband seeking a position in the White House, she might be assuming the duties of First Lady.
Via @SaraMurray: Ivanka Trump to get office in same space reserved for First Lady in WH; Ivanka's title still TBD, per transition source

Sarah Murray, a CNN reporter who covered Trump’s campaign on the trail, reported that Ivanka is looking to get office space that is typically reserved for the First Lady. As we reported earlier, Melania Trump and son Barron will be staying in New York, at least until Barron finishes the school year.
However the Trump team has said the report isn’t accurate. “No decisions regarding Ivanka’s involvement have been made,” longtime Trump spokesperson Hope Hicks told The Hill. Yet, her activities as part of the transition–including staking out climate change as her pet issue with former Vice President Al Gore and sitting in on the meeting with Japan’s leader–suggest otherwise.
However some, especially those who see the position as an antiquated one, think this actually might be a good idea. Especially since the First Lady’s duties are essentially serving as the official White House host.
“Making an official White House hosting position a job that ought to be filled by the person best-suited for the work, rather than the person who happens to be married to the president, would accomplish a couple of important things,” Alyssa Rosenberg wrote for The Washington Post. She argues that this appointment would show that not only is the job of FLOTUS necessary, it’s a position that should be awarded by talent, not by marriage.
Remarkably, there is precedent for this. President James Buchanan, the only bachelor president, had his adopted niece Harriet Lane serve as his First Lady. President Andrew Jackson also had his daughter Emily serve in this role after his wife’s death.
